The Permanent Collection

MAM's permanent collection includes over 12,000 works spanning American painting, sculpture, works on paper, and Native American art. Highlights include:

George Inness Collection

The most significant collection of works by George Inness outside of the Smithsonian. Inness lived in Montclair from 1878 until his death in 1894 and produced some of his most important Tonalist landscapes here. If you visit for one reason, this is it.

Native American Art

One of the largest collections of Native American art in the Northeast — over 3,000 objects representing cultures across North America. Frequently rotating exhibitions supplement the permanent galleries.

American Impressionism

Works by Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and John Twachtman sit alongside the Inness paintings. A genuinely strong representation of the American Impressionist movement.

Contemporary Additions

MAM has expanded its contemporary holdings significantly over the past decade, adding works by living American artists that speak to current social and political themes.

Family & Community Programs

Sunday Family Art Lab

Free drop-in art-making sessions for families every Sunday. No registration required. A fantastic and genuinely creative program — better than most children's museum offerings.

Art Classes & Workshops

MAM runs an extensive continuing education program for adults and children. Drawing, painting, ceramics, and more. Registration required; check the website for the current term.

Member Events

Members get previews, curator talks, and special access. Annual membership starts at $75 and pays for itself quickly if you visit regularly.
